The Kitchen Table Is Open For Dialogue

The idea is simple. To create a blog that focuses on the urban agricultural scene in New Orleans. The focus is on urban agriculture networks and what they facilitate for those who live in New Orleans. Mainly this is a motivational tool for my thesis which focuses on urban agricultural networks in New Orleans and how it is addressing local issues on food accessibility and awareness.

It is not clear whether or not locals (and outsiders) have a coherent understanding of what the urban agriculture environment looks like in New Orleans. I am positive that I do not have a clear-cut picture but I am working on it. Admittedly, while I am not the only one trying to do this, I hope to bring farmers closer to consumers and vice versa. I believe the slogan "buy local, eat local" has deep roots in the historical food culture of New Orleans and its current popularity is in part a reinvented philosophy of the past.

Here at The Kitchen Table, I will critique/discuss food politics and justice at the global, national and local level, critique books and articles that write about the subject. I will also post interviews, with the interviewees permission, that I conduct with local food activists and agriculturalists. I will write about my own trials and tribulations as I garden at a community garden and start a new garden from scratch in a nearby neighborhood. While I am writing this blog to push me to become more critical with my readings and observations, I hope this becomes a forum for discussion on all topics related to urban agriculture, food, and culture in New Orleans.

This is the kitchen table were all are invited to sit and participate.
